Procedures

In the Allergy-Immunology practice we follow the Guidelines of the Brazilian Society of Allergy and Immunopathology, the World Allergy Organization, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology and the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology.

Cytologic analyses of secretions are useful in the evaluation of the inflammatory processes of allergic conditions, specially of rhinitis.

Spirometry, baseline and post-bronchodilation, is routinely done in the work-up of asthmatic patients. It helps assessing the degree of airway obstruction and the potential for therapeutic response.

Allergy skin tests in asthma, rhinitis and conjunctivitis are routinely performed along with positive and negative controls. Aeroallergens are frequently tested: house dust mites, molds, pollens, cockroaches, dogs, cats, cattle, horses, rabbits, feathers, etc. Prick skin tests are also useful for the diagnosis of food allergies. Drug allergy to penicillin, local anesthetics and muscle relaxants can also be checked with standardized allergy skin tests. The same is true for insect allergies (venoms of bees, hornets, wasps, yellow jackets and fire ants). Patch testing in the back with a 72-96 hours reading can be done in the evaluation of patients with contact dermatitis.

Immunotherapy (“allergy shots”) can be prescribed in cases of allergic asthma and/or rhinitis with or without allergic conjunctivitis. The same is true for Himenoptera insect allergies with excellent results.
